ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Scintillator

A scintillator is like a fancy flashlight that can detect invisible particles. The flashlight is made up of tiny crystals that can glow when they are hit by these particles. When the particles hit the crystals, they create little bursts of light called scintillations, which the flashlight can pick up and turn into signals. These signals can then be used by scientists to study things like radiation, medical imaging, or even to detect cosmic rays from outer space. Scintillators are very important tools for understanding the world around us, and just like a flashlight, they are always standing by, ready to shed some light on things we can't see with our own eyes!
