ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Security deposit

Imagine you are playing with your friend at their house and you accidentally break one of their toys. Your friend might ask you to give them some of your own toys as a security deposit, which means they hold onto your toys until you can fix or replace the toy you broke.

Now imagine you are renting a house or apartment. The person who owns the house might ask you for a security deposit before you move in. This is money that you give them before you move in, just in case you accidentally damage something in the house while you are living there.

If everything is okay when you move out, the owner will give you back your security deposit. But if something is damaged, the owner might keep some of your security deposit to help pay for the repairs.

It's important to take care of the house or apartment you are renting, so you can get all of your security deposit back when you move out.
