ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Self-diagnosis

Self-diagnosis is when we try to figure out what might be wrong with our bodies or minds all by ourselves instead of going to a doctor for help. It's like trying to play doctor but without all the knowledge and tools that real doctors have.

Sometimes we might start thinking that we have some kind of health problem because we feel different or weird. For example, if we have a headache or a stomachache, we might start thinking that we have a disease or an infection. Then we might start looking up information on the internet or talking to friends or family members who have gone through similar experiences to try and find out what's wrong with us.

However, the thing about self-diagnosis is that it can be very unreliable. Since we don't have the knowledge and expertise of a real doctor, we might not be able to accurately diagnose ourselves. This could lead to us thinking that we have a certain condition when we really don't, or missing other health problems that only a doctor would be able to identify.

That's why it's important to always seek professional medical advice if we think that we might be sick or have some kind of health problem. Doctors can examine us carefully, run tests, and give us accurate diagnoses and treatment plans. So, although playing doctor might seem fun, the best thing we can do is to leave it to the real professionals when it comes to our health.
