ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Sex hormone

Sex hormones are special chemicals in our bodies that make us boys or girls. They help us grow and develop into adults. Boys have a hormone called testosterone, and girls have a hormone called estrogen. These hormones are made in special glands in our bodies called the testes (for boys) and ovaries (for girls).

Testosterone and estrogen also help us do things like grow hair in special places, and they make our voices deeper or higher-pitched. They also help our bones grow strong, keep our skin healthy, and even affect our mood!

When we are babies, we don't have much of these hormones yet. But as we grow up, our bodies start to make more and more of them. By the time we hit puberty (which means becoming a teenager), our bodies start to change a lot! That's when we start to really see the effects of sex hormones, like getting taller and growing hair on our bodies.
