ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Sexual violence in South Africa

Sexual violence is when someone does something to someone else's body that they don't want or didn't agree to. In South Africa, this happens to a lot of people, especially women and girls. It's like when someone takes or touches something that doesn't belong to them without asking first.

There are a few reasons why this happens. Sometimes people do this because they want to feel powerful or in control. Or, they might think it is okay or normal to do this. It's like when someone takes a toy away from you without asking or hitting you to make you give it to them.

Sadly, in South Africa, many people don't get help when this happens to them. This is because they might be afraid or ashamed to tell someone. Or, they might think that no one will believe them. It's like when you break something but feel scared to tell your parents because you don't want them to be mad at you.

However, it's very important to get help if this happens to you or someone you know. You can tell a trusted adult, like a teacher or family member, who can help you get medical help and report what happened to the police. It's like when you accidentally fall and scrape your knee. You tell an adult so they can help you clean it and put a band-aid on it.

Everyone deserves to feel safe and respected, and it's important to talk to others about preventing sexual violence so that everyone can be happy and healthy.
