Sieving

Ok kiddo, so imagine you have a bunch of sand and you want to separate the small rocks from it. One way to do that is to put the sand through a sieve, which is kind of like a big strainer with tiny holes.

When you pour the sand into the sieve and shake it around, the sand falls through the tiny holes but the bigger rocks get stuck on top of the sieve. So you can just take the rocks off the top and you have separated them from the sand.

This is called sieving, and people use it for all kinds of things besides sand and rocks. They might use it to separate different sizes of grains or to sift flour and sugar for baking. It’s a handy tool for separating things into different sizes or categories!
