Sign (linguistics)

In linguistics, a sign is something that stands for something else. This could be a word, a gesture, a picture, or even an emotion. When you use a sign, you are telling someone else something without actually saying it out loud. For example, if you say the word "dog" you are using a sign to let someone know that you are talking about a type of animal.
