ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Sign language in infants and toddlers

Sign language is like talking with your hands! Just like you can wave hello or point to something you want, there are special signs that mean different words. When babies are too young to speak, they can use these signs to communicate with their parents and caregivers.

When parents or caregivers teach babies sign language, they show them the signs for common words like "hungry," "thirsty," and "more." They say the word while making the sign, so the baby learns what the sign means. This helps the baby to communicate their needs and wants without getting upset or frustrated.

As babies start to learn more signs, they can tell their parents or caregivers when they want to play, when they're tired, or even when they need a diaper change! And when they get a little older, they'll start talking more and using the signs less. But learning sign language early on can help babies feel more confident and independent, and it's lots of fun too!
