Silent film

A silent film is a movie that doesn't have any sound. Instead of having music to accompany the action, there are usually captions or intertitles (written words on the screen) that explain what is happening in the story. Silent films usually also have special music playing in the theater to make the movie more exciting. Silent films were the most popular kind of movie from about 1895-1930 before more modern "talking pictures" with sound were invented.
