ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Simple (algebra)

Okay kiddo, algebra is like a big puzzle where you have to figure out what a letter or a number stands for.

Let's say we have an equation like this: 5x + 3 = 18. We want to find out what x stands for.

To do that, we want to get x by itself on one side of the equation. So we can start by getting rid of the 3 on the left side. To do that, we can subtract 3 from both sides of the equation.

5x + 3 - 3 = 18 - 3

Now the 3s cancel out on the left side, so we're left with:

5x = 15

Next, we want to get rid of the 5 on the left side. To do that, we can divide both sides of the equation by 5.

5x ÷ 5 = 15 ÷ 5

Now the 5s cancel out on the left side, and we're left with:

x = 3

So x stands for 3 in this equation.

Algebra can be a bit tricky, but by following these steps, we can solve equations and find out what unknowns stand for in no time.
