ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Single-ended signalling

Single-ended signalling is like a conversation between two people using only one phone. When you talk on the phone, your words go through a wire (or wireless signal) to the other person's phone. Single-ended signalling means that the conversation only goes from one phone to the other phone.

Imagine you are playing with a flashlight with a friend in a dark room. The flashlight is like the phone signal, and the friend is like the other phone. If you shine the flashlight at your friend, they can see the light and know where you are pointing the flashlight. But if you turn the flashlight off, your friend can't see the light anymore and doesn't know where you are pointing the flashlight.

The same thing happens with single-ended signalling. When one device sends a signal to another device, it's like shining a flashlight. If the signal is strong and clear, the other device can understand it. But if the signal is weak or distorted, the other device can't understand it.

So, single-ended signalling means that communication only goes one way. It's like shining a flashlight to show where you are, but not being able to see where your friend is shining their flashlight. It can be effective in some situations, but it can also have limitations.
