ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Sisyphus

Sisyphus was a character in Greek mythology who was punished by the gods for being a trickster and a cheater. His punishment was to push a large rock up a steep hill, only to have it roll back down and start all over again.

Imagine playing with a really big ball and trying to roll it up a really steep hill – it’s hard work! But imagine this happening over and over again, with the ball never staying at the top of the hill. That’s what Sisyphus had to do, and it was a never-ending job.

This punishment was meant to be really hard and frustrating, because Sisyphus was a naughty guy and the gods wanted to teach him a lesson. It’s like if you were caught doing something bad and your parents made you do a task over and over again until you learned not to do it anymore.

So, whenever you hear the name Sisyphus, remember that he was a character in a story who had to keep pushing a big rock up a hill, but it never stayed at the top. It’s a reminder that sometimes when we do something bad, we have to face the consequences and learn from our mistakes.
