Skin cancer is when something bad grows on your skin because you've been out in the sun or using tanning beds too much or because you have a family member who also had it.
Your skin is like a special suit that keeps all the important things inside your body safe from the outside world. But sometimes, when you stay out in the sun for too long, tiny things called "UV rays" can sneak into your skin and cause problems.
These tiny UV rays can make your skin cells start growing in a weird way, kind of like when you try to draw a straight line but your hand shakes and it turns into a squiggly one. When too many cells start growing in a squiggly way on your skin, that's when you might have skin cancer.
Sometimes skin cancer might look like a little sore, like when you get a cut, but it doesn't go away right away. Other times, it might look like a little bump or a spot on your skin that's a different color than the rest, like a freckle or a mole.
If you or someone you know notices any of these things on their skin and it doesn't go away, it's important to go to a special doctor called a dermatologist to get it checked out.
Most of the time, even if someone does get skin cancer, the doctor can help get rid of it and make them all better. But it's also really important to remember to protect your skin from UV rays by wearing sunscreen, hats, and staying in the shade when you can.
