ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Skywave

Skywave is when radio signals bounce off of the upper layer of our atmosphere, called the ionosphere, and travel really far distances. It's kind of like when you bounce a ball off a wall, and it goes farther than if you just threw it straight. Radio waves usually travel straight, unless they hit something or are blocked by something, which means they can only go so far. But when radio waves hit the ionosphere, they bounce off and keep going, kind of like the ball bouncing off the wall. This allows people all over the world to talk to each other using radios, even if they are really far apart. It's like magic, but really it's just the science of how radio waves work!
