ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Smallest organisms

Hey there! So, there are some really, really small living things out there that we call "organisms". These things are so small that we can't even see them with our own eyes!

Now, when we talk about the "smallest" organisms, there are a few different types we can look at. Let's start with bacteria.

Bacteria are tiny little living things that can be found all over the place - in soil, water, and even inside our own bodies. Some bacteria are big enough for us to see, but there are others that are so small they can only be seen with a microscope. These tiny bacteria are often smaller than a single human cell!

Next up, we have viruses. Viruses are even smaller than bacteria - they're so tiny that they can't even really be called "living" things on their own. Instead, viruses need to infect other living things (like our own bodies) in order to survive and reproduce. They're often only a few nanometers in size, which is so small you can't even see them with a regular microscope!

Finally, there are even smaller things out there called "prions". Prions are even smaller than viruses and are made up of just a few proteins. They're so small that they can't even be seen with a microscope!

So, there you go - when we talk about the "smallest" living things out there, we're often talking about bacteria, viruses, and prions, which are all so tiny that we can't even see them without a special tool like a microscope. Cool, huh?
