ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Snowball Earth

Do you know what snow is? It's made up of tiny frozen water particles. When it's really cold outside, everything around you is covered in snow. Now imagine if the whole entire Earth was covered in snow, like a giant snowman. That's what we call the Snowball Earth.

It happened a long, long time ago, before humans existed. The Earth was a lot different back then. The temperatures were much colder than they are today, and there were no plants or animals living on land.

The reason why the Earth turned into a Snowball was because of a special mechanism. When the Earth gets too cold, the ice at the poles starts growing and spreading, like an ice cream cone melting on a hot day. Once the ice reaches the Equator, it reflects all the sunlight back into space. That means the Earth doesn't get any warmth from the Sun, so it gets colder and colder.

The colder it gets, the more ice forms, and the more sunlight gets reflected away. It becomes a vicious cycle, like a never-ending snowstorm. Eventually, the entire Earth is covered in ice, and it becomes a Snowball Earth.

But that wasn't the end of the story. The Earth eventually got warmer again, and the ice started melting. That's when life was able to evolve and flourish. So, even though the Snowball Earth was a really chilly time in our planet's history, it paved the way for the amazing diversity of life that we see today.
