ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Social construction

Okay, imagine you and your friends are playing with Legos. You guys can build whatever you want with the Legos, right? Maybe you make a castle or a spaceship or a house. These are all things you made up in your imagination, but now they're real because you built them with your Legos.

Well, that's kind of like what social construction is. Adults use their imaginations and ideas to create things that are real but only because people agree that they're real. For example, money is real, but it only has value because people agree that it does. A hundred-dollar bill is just a piece of paper with some ink on it, but people agree that it's worth a lot.

Other things that are social constructions include language, laws, and manners. They're all made up by people, but now they're real because we all follow them. And because we all follow them, they have a lot of power over us - we can get into trouble if we break laws or don't follow the rules of manners.

So basically, social construction means that we create things from our imaginations, and then those things become real because we all agree that they're real. It's kind of like playing with Legos, but with grown-up ideas instead of toys.
