ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Social orphan

Okay, so imagine you have a family with a mom and a dad. They take care of you, feed you, and keep you safe. But there are some kids who don’t have a family like that. They might have a mom or a dad, but maybe they can’t take care of them for some reason. Or maybe both of their parents are gone and they don’t have anybody to look after them.

When kids don’t have somebody to take care of them, we call them orphans. A social orphan is a little different though. Social orphans are kids who have parents, but their parents are not taking care of them like they should. Sometimes that means their parents don’t have enough money to give them food and clothes. Other times, it could mean their parents are sick or are not around because they are working. There are many reasons why parents might not be able to take care of their kids.

So, what does it mean to be a social orphan? It means that even though these kids might technically have parents, they don’t have a good family situation. They may not have enough money, food, or love at home. That’s why it’s important for people like teachers, community leaders, and even other families to help social orphans whenever they can.
