Okay kiddo, have you ever tried to whisper something to your friend and someone else heard it too? That's because our ears can pick up sounds from many different places, even if we don't want to hear them.
Now, imagine you are in a room, but you don't want to hear all the noises that are happening outside of it. You might want to concentrate on your work, or maybe you are trying to sleep. So what can you do?
Well, here's where sound masking comes in. It means creating a type of sound that is designed to cover up other sounds that you don't want to hear. Kind of like putting a blanket over your head to block out the light.
This sound can be a variety of things, from white noise (a soft, steady sound like a fan or a radio tuned to an empty frequency) to specially generated sounds that are designed to be soothing and unobtrusive. They make a kind of wall of sound that your ears focus on, so they don't pay attention to other, less pleasant sounds.
Sound masking is used in all sorts of places, like offices, hospitals and schools, to make them quieter and more pleasant places to be. And it's just like having your ears wrapped up in a cozy blanket!
