ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Space force

Space Force is a new branch of the military that the United States created in 2019 to protect and defend our country's interests in space. Just like the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines, Space Force is responsible for keeping America safe and secure from threats – but instead of protecting us on Earth, they protect us in space!

Space might be a big, dark, empty place, but it's actually really important to our everyday lives. Satellites orbiting Earth allow us to do things like watch TV, use the internet, and even track the weather. They help the military with things like communication and GPS navigation. And they allow scientists to study our planet and the universe beyond.

Unfortunately, there are some people and countries who want to harm the United States by destroying our satellites or disrupting our access to space. That's where Space Force comes in – they make sure that our space assets are protected, so we can keep using them and stay safe.

But Space Force doesn't just deal with threats from other countries – they're also going to explore and develop new technologies that will help us learn even more about space. They might even help us with things like mining asteroids for minerals, developing new spacecraft, and exploring other planets.

So, in short: Space Force is a new branch of the military that protects us in space, helps us use space technology to our advantage, and makes sure that space exploration and research continue to be an important part of our society.
