Speech sound disorder

Okay kiddo, you know how we use our mouths, lips, and tongue to make sounds when we speak? Sometimes, when some kids try to say certain words or sounds, they might have some trouble making them correctly. This could be because they have a speech sound disorder.

A speech sound disorder is when a kid has difficulty saying certain speech sounds. It could be that they swap some sounds, like "wabbit" instead of "rabbit," or they might leave off some sounds, like "top" instead of "stop." This can make it hard for other people to understand what the child is trying to say.

Now, sometimes, a child might only have trouble saying specific sounds, which is called an articulation disorder. Other times, they might have trouble with entire groups of sounds, which is called a phonological disorder. A speech-language pathologist can work with the child to help them make progress with their speech sound disorder. They might use special exercises and games to help them practice making sounds correctly, so they can speak more clearly and communicate better with others.
