Sperm whaling

Sperm whales are big animals that live in the ocean. They are called sperm whales because they are boys and they make a special liquid called sperm that helps make baby whales like them.

A long time ago, people wanted a special kind of oil called sperm oil that they could use for lots of things, like lighting lamps and making candles. The oil comes from inside the heads of the sperm whales, which is called “blubber.”

So, some people decided to go out in boats and hunt the sperm whales. It was a dangerous job because the whales are big and strong, and they didn’t like being hunted. The hunters would use harpoons, which are like big, sharp sticks with ropes on them, to catch the whales.

When they caught a whale, they would cut off its head and take out the blubber. Then, they would boil the blubber to make the oil. It took a lot of work, but people needed the oil to make things like candles and soap.

However, hunting sperm whales became a big problem because too many people were doing it. The whales started to disappear because there weren’t enough left. People decided that it wasn’t worth it to hunt them anymore, and they found other ways to make oil. Now, people protect the whales so they can live and keep making baby whales.
