Split peas

Okay kiddo, let's talk about split peas!

Split peas are a type of legume - like beans or lentils. They come from a type of pea plant that's grown in lots of different countries. When the peas are harvested, they're usually dried out (kind of like how raisins are dried grapes), and then the outer layer of the pea is removed.

Once the outer layer is gone, the pea splits into two halves - which is where the name "split pea" comes from. These halves are usually either green or yellow, but they're both pretty similar in terms of taste and nutrition.

So what can you do with split peas? A lot of people like to cook them in soups or stews - they kind of have a creamy texture when they're cooked, so they can help thicken up a broth. You can also cook them with some spices and veggies to make a side dish that's super yummy.

And one more fun fact for you - split peas are really good for you! They're packed with protein and fiber, which are important things for your body. So if you see split peas at the grocery store, maybe you can ask your grown-up to buy some and try them out!
