ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Spotlight effect

Hey kiddo! Have you ever felt like everyone is looking at you when you're doing something embarrassing or just standing out in a crowd? That's what we call the spotlight effect.

You know how when you're in a room with lots of people and the lights are shining on the stage or a specific person? That's called a spotlight! Now imagine feeling like that spotlight is on you all the time, even if it's not. That's what the spotlight effect feels like.

Basically, when you do something that you feel might make people look at you or judge you, you might feel like everyone's eyes are on you. You might feel like your mistakes or your looks are magnified and everyone can see them. But in reality, people are usually too busy thinking about themselves to even notice your mistake or your appearance that much.

It's kind of like if you wear a new outfit to school and you feel like everyone is staring at you. But really, they might just glance at you and then go back to their own business. It's important to remember that the spotlight effect is just a feeling - it doesn't mean that everyone is actually looking at you all the time. So don't be too hard on yourself, kiddo!
