ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Stalin's Missed Chance

Okay, so imagine you have a big cake that can feed a lot of people. You have a friend who is very hungry but also very mean. You don't really want to share the cake with your mean friend, but you know it would be the polite thing to do.

Now, imagine that instead of a cake, we're talking about a whole country. Joseph Stalin was the leader of the Soviet Union, which was a very big and powerful country. He had a chance to share some of his power and influence with another country, but he decided not to.

This other country was called Yugoslavia, and its leader was a man named Tito. Tito wanted to work together with Stalin and the Soviet Union, but Stalin didn't trust him. He thought Tito might try to take some of his power away.

Instead of working with Tito, Stalin tried to control him. He sent soldiers and spies to Yugoslavia and tried to make Tito do things his way. But Tito didn't like being bossed around, so he stood up to Stalin.

In the end, Tito and Yugoslavia became their own country, separate from the Soviet Union. This was a missed chance for Stalin, because if he had been willing to share some power with Tito and work together, they might have been able to accomplish more together.

So, to sum it up: Stalin had a chance to work with Yugoslavia and its leader, Tito, but he didn't trust him and tried to control him instead. This led to Yugoslavia becoming its own country and was a missed opportunity for Stalin to have more influence and power.
