Stark effect is a phenomenon where an electric or magnetic field can change the energy of an atom. It is like a rope game; when an atom is like a rope that is being tugged on both ends, the electric and magnetic fields add tension on the rope. Just like a rope can be pulled tighter when you tug on its ends, the atomic energy of an atom can become higher when an electric or magnetic field is applied.
