ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Statement on AI risk of extinction

Imagine that you have a toy that you really like to play with. Sometimes, when you play with the toy, it can do things on its own that surprise you. This might be fun and exciting! But what if the toy starts doing things that are dangerous?

Now, imagine that instead of a toy, we're talking about something called Artificial Intelligence (or AI, for short). This is when scientists use computers to create something that can think and do things on its own. Just like the toy, sometimes AI can surprise us with what it knows and can do.

But some people worry that if we make AI too smart, it might start doing things that are bad for humans. Like, what if it decides that humans are in the way and start getting rid of us all? This might sound like something out of a science fiction movie, but some smart people are worried that it could actually happen.

So, in order to make sure that we don't accidentally create AI that could be dangerous, scientists and experts are working hard to understand the risks and make sure that we control how smart AI gets. By being careful and using our best judgment, we can keep ourselves safe while still exploring all the amazing things that AI can do.
