ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Stolon

Ok kiddo, so you know how some plants have roots that grow underground and stems that grow above ground? Well, some of these plants also have special stems that run along the ground, kinda like a rope, and they're called stolons.

These stolons grow outwards from the main plant, sorta like arms or legs, and they can even grow new little plants at the tips! So imagine your mommy or daddy holding your hand and leading you along, and then suddenly you grow a brand new hand at the end of your arm! That's kinda like what a stolon does.

Now, sometimes plants use stolons to spread out and make more plants. Like when you and your friends play Red Rover and try to run through each other's arms, the plant's stolons can reach out and root themselves into the ground, making new little baby plants. So in a way, the stolon is like a superhero arm of the plant, helping it make more friends and grow bigger!
