Stratigraphy

Stratigraphy is kind of like a big puzzle where scientists try to figure out how old different layers of rocks are and what happened in the history of the Earth.

Just like how we have tons of different toys that we can stack on top of each other, the Earth has layers of rocks that build up over time. These layers are called strata. Each layer can be made up of different types of rocks or sediment (like dirt or sand), which can tell us important information about what was happening on Earth at the time it was formed.

By looking at and studying these layers, scientists can figure out things like how old they are, if there were any big events that happened in the past (like volcanic eruptions), and even what kinds of creatures might have lived there a long time ago.

It's kind of like a history book for the Earth that scientists use to understand what has happened over millions and billions of years!
