ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

String diagram

Okay kiddo, have you ever played with a balloon and a piece of string? You tie the string to the balloon and hold onto the other end of the string. Then you can move the balloon around by pulling on the string. That’s kind of what a string diagram is like.

In science and engineering, people use string diagrams to help them understand how things move and interact with each other. Just like the balloon and the string, they use lines (or “strings”) to show how different things are connected or related.

For example, let’s say we’re studying how the parts of a machine work together. We could draw a string diagram to show how each part is connected to the others. We might use a straight line to show a direct connection, or a curved line to show that one thing affects another indirectly. Each line in the diagram tells us something about how the machine works.

String diagrams can be really helpful when you need to understand complex systems. Just like holding onto the string can help you keep control of the balloon, looking at a string diagram can help you keep track of all the different parts and how they fit together. Pretty cool, huh?
