ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Sue Savage-Rumbaugh

Sue Savage-Rumbaugh is a special scientist who studies animals like monkeys and tries to understand how they think and communicate. She is very interested in how animals can learn to use language to talk with humans.

Savage-Rumbaugh created a special place for monkeys called the "Great Ape Trust." There, she can watch the monkeys and talk to them in a way they can understand. She even teaches them words, like "apple" and "ball," so that they can communicate with her.

One of the monkeys that Savage-Rumbaugh has studied is named "Kanzi." Kanzi is a very smart monkey who has learned a lot of words and can communicate with humans in a special way. He can talk to them using sign language or with a special computer that helps him type out words.

Savage-Rumbaugh's work with Kanzi has helped us learn a lot more about how monkeys think and communicate. She is trying to teach us that just because humans are different from animals, it doesn't mean that animals can't be smart and learn to communicate with us.
