ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Surface force

Imagine you are playing with clay. When you push two pieces of clay together, they stick together and it becomes harder to pull them apart. This sticky force that is created when two surfaces come into contact with each other is called surface force.

Surface force happens because of tiny things called molecules that make up everything around us. These molecules are so small that they are too small to see with just our eyes, but they are there! When two surfaces come into contact, the molecules on each surface start to stick together and become attracted to each other. This is what creates the surface force.

You can feel surface force in many everyday situations. Have you ever tried to separate two pieces of tape that have been stuck together? It can be really hard because the surface force between the tape is so strong. Even the way your shoes stick to the ground when you walk is because of the surface force between the soles of your shoes and the ground.

Surface force can have an impact on all sorts of things, like how things move or how well they stick together. It's an important part of how our world works!
