ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Taiga

Taiga is a really big forest that is found in the northern parts of the world, like in Canada, Russia, and Alaska. It's sometimes also called a boreal forest.

Now, imagine you are walking through the taiga. Everywhere you look, all you can see are trees! There are tall trees like spruce, fir and pine trees. These trees have needles instead of leaves, so they don't fall off in winter. This kind of tree is called coniferous because it has cones.

All around you there are animals too, like bears, wolves, moose and reindeer. You might also see rabbits, squirrels and foxes. There are also many different kinds of birds that live in the taiga, like woodpeckers and owls.

The ground in the taiga is usually covered with snow for a good part of the year. When the snow melts in the spring, the ground can be very muddy because there is so much water.

So, the taiga is a huge forest in the northern part of the world, where there are lots of trees, animals and birds, and the ground is covered with snow for a long time.
