Okay kiddo, let's talk about tallgrass prairies!
Imagine a big piece of land covered in tall grasses that grow as tall as you are, even taller! These giant grasses are called switchgrass, big bluestem, and Indian grass. They sway in the wind and make a rustling sound when you walk through them.
In this land, you won't find many trees, but you might see some colorful wildflowers like purple coneflowers, black-eyed susans, and butterfly weed. And if you're lucky, you might spot some animals too like bison, prairie dogs, and coyotes.
This land is called a tallgrass prairie and it used to cover a big part of North America. But as people started to cut down trees and grow crops, the tallgrass prairie became smaller and smaller.
Today, some people are working hard to protect and preserve the remaining tallgrass prairies. They know that these grasses and animals are an important part of our environment and they want to make sure they don't disappear forever.
So now you know, a tallgrass prairie is a big piece of land filled with tall grasses, wildflowers, and animals that needs our help to stay healthy and grow bigger again!
