ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Tax protester history

So, remember how you sometimes get money for doing chores like cleaning your room or helping with the dishes? Well, adults also get money by doing their jobs, and that's called income.

When people make money, the government takes a small part of it to help pay for things like schools, roads, and hospitals. This is called taxes.

Now, some people think that they shouldn't have to pay taxes. They say that the government is doing a bad job with the money and that it's not fair for them to take money from people who worked hard for it.

These people are called tax protesters. Some of them have protested by not paying their taxes, while others have tried to argue in court that they shouldn't have to pay taxes.

However, not paying taxes or arguing in court doesn't work, and it's actually against the law. Tax protesters can get in big trouble with the government if they don't pay their taxes or try to avoid them.

So, it's important to remember that paying taxes is a part of being a responsible member of society, and that the government uses the money to help make our communities better places to live.
