Telephone exchange

A telephone exchange is like a giant sorting machine for telephone calls. Just like when you sort your toys into neat piles, a telephone exchange sorts all the phone calls that come in and goes out.

Imagine you have a toy phone and want to call your friend. You press the numbers on the toy phone and wait for your friend to pick up on the other end. When they answer, you can hear each other and have a conversation.

Now imagine millions of people doing the same thing at the same time. That's when things can get really messy! This is where the telephone exchange comes in.

When you make a phone call, it goes to your nearest telephone exchange. The exchange checks to see who you are calling and sends your call to the correct exchange, which then sends it to your friend's nearest exchange. That exchange then sends it to your friend's phone.

It might seem like a lot of steps, but it happens in just seconds! All of this sorting is done so that you can talk to your friend or family member quickly and easily.

And that's how a telephone exchange helps thousands of people talk to each other at the same time!
