Territorial evolution of Germany

Territorial evolution of Germany means how the land that we now call Germany has changed over time. Germany used to be a bunch of smaller kingdoms, principalities, and duchies. Imagine you have a big puzzle that you want to put together, but first, you have to find all the pieces. Sometimes you find a piece that belongs to a different puzzle and you have to try and fit it in anyway. That's kind of what happened with Germany over time.

In the medieval ages, there wasn't really a country called Germany. There were a bunch of small states that had their own rulers and laws. They were sometimes at war with each other and sometimes they tried to work together. Then, in the late 1800s, a bunch of these small states got together and formed a united country called Germany. This was called the German Empire.

The German Empire was really big and included parts of modern-day Poland, France, and even parts of Russia. But after World War I, Germany had to give up some of that land. They also lost even more land after World War II when they were defeated by the Allied forces.

In the years after World War II, Germany was divided into two countries. There was West Germany, which was a democracy, and East Germany, which was communist. West Germany was much more successful and eventually, in 1990, East Germany joined with West Germany to form a single country again.

So Germany's territory over time has been like a puzzle with lots of pieces that keep changing. But now Germany is a united country that works together as one.
