The Blackfriars of Shrewsbury

Okay kiddo, have you ever heard of a group called "the blackfriars"? They were a group of people who were part of a religious order called the Dominicans, and they lived in a special building called a friary in Shrewsbury, England a long time ago.

The friary was kind of like a big house where the blackfriars could live and do their work. They spent a lot of time praying and helping people in the community. They were really good at teaching people about God and helping the poor.

But one day, some bad things happened. King Henry VIII didn't like the blackfriars and he ordered them to leave their friary. He wanted all the people in England to follow his religion instead of theirs.

So the blackfriars had to pack up and leave their home in Shrewsbury. The friary was eventually turned into a school and other buildings, but people still remember the blackfriars and what they did for the community.

So even though the blackfriars aren't there anymore, we can still learn about them and appreciate the good things they did for the people of Shrewsbury.
