ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

The Extended Phenotype

The extended phenotype is the idea that an animal's behavior affects things in the environment and can create changes that can then be inherited by later generations. It means that behavior can have an effect on the world around us and can influence how a species survives and passes down their genes. Think about birds building nests- their behavior of building the nest affects the way their babies get protected from the environment, which helps them survive and pass on their genes.
