ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

The Man Without a Country

Okay, so there is a story about a man who did something wrong when he was in the United States a long time ago. He was found guilty of doing the wrong thing and punished by being sent away from the country.

But instead of being sent to another country like most people, he wasn't allowed to go anywhere. He was stuck on a ship sailing around the world, without a place to call home, without any friends or family around him.

People called him "the man without a country" because technically he didn't belong to any country that would accept him. He missed the United States so much and realized how much he took his home for granted.

He didn't know he was going to miss it so much until he was forced to be away from it. That's the lesson in the story - to appreciate your home and not take it for granted, because you don't know what you have until it's taken away.
