Third-party custody

Okay kiddo, you know how when parents get divorced or separated, they have to figure out where their kids will live? Sometimes, a third-party, like a grandparent, aunt, or family friend, will ask to take care of the kids instead of the parents.

This is called third-party custody. It means that someone who is not the child's parent is legally responsible for taking care of the child and making decisions for them, like where they go to school or what they eat for dinner.

Usually, a third-party will only get custody if the parents are not able to take care of the child themselves, like if they are sick or not being responsible enough. The court will make a decision based on what is best for the child and their safety and wellbeing.

It's important for everyone to remember that even if a third-party has custody, the child's parents still have rights and can still visit and be a part of their child's life. It can be a tricky situation, but the most important thing is always what is best for the child.
