ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Timbre

Timbre is like the unique voice of different things we hear.

When you hear your friend's voice, it sounds different from your teacher's or your parent's voice, even if they say the same words. This difference in sound is called timbre.

For example, if you listen to an acoustic guitar playing the same note as an electronic keyboard, you can tell which one is which because they sound different. Acoustic guitar might sound warmer and more natural than electronic keyboard, which can sound more synthetic.

In the same way, instruments of the same type or even people's voices can have different timbres as well. This is because each thing that makes a sound, like a guitar string or a person's vocal cords, creates a unique pattern of vibrations that give it its own special timbre.

So, to summarize, timbre is what makes different sounds unique and recognizable by our ears!
