Formants are a special kind of sound made by our vocal cords and mouths. They help us to make the words we say sound different so that people can understand us. Formants are made up of different pitches or frequencies. When two or more of these frequencies combine, a formant takes place. For example, if two pitches of the same frequency come together, the resulting sound will be low and mellow. If two different pitches come together, the resulting sound will be higher and louder.
