ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Timeline of longest spaceflights

Okay kiddo, have you ever heard of astronauts? They are people who like to go to space and explore the universe. When they go on a really long trip in space, it's called a spaceflight, and some spaceflights are longer than others.

There are many different spaceflights that have happened since people started going to space, but some of the longest ones are pretty special. Let me explain!

The first longest spaceflight was made by a Russian astronaut named Valeri Polyakov. He spent 437 days in space, which is more than a year! That's a really long time to be away from home. Imagine not seeing your family or friends for over a year!

The second longest spaceflight was made by a Russian astronaut named Sergei Krikalev. He spent 803 days in space, which is almost two and a half years! That's like missing your birthday, Christmas, and many other holidays all at once.

The third longest spaceflight was made by a NASA astronaut named Scott Kelly. He spent 340 days in space, which is a little less than a year. But what's really amazing about his spaceflight is that he was part of an experiment to see how living in space affects the human body. They want to know if people can survive in space for a really long time, so they can explore more planets and learn more about the universe.

All of these long spaceflights happened on the International Space Station, which is like a big science lab in space. People go there to do experiments and learn more about space. Can you imagine living in a lab in space for over a year? It must be pretty cool to look out the window and see the Earth from so far away.

So that's the timeline of the longest spaceflights, kiddo. I hope you learned something new today!
