ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Timeline of rocket and missile technology

Rocket and missile technology is how people design and build things that can fly and travel through space. Rockets and missiles have been around for a very long time, starting with the first rocket, the Chinese "fire arrow," which was invented over 1000 years ago. Over the years, scientists, engineers, and inventors have made lots of improvements to rockets and missiles.

At first, people used rockets to send fireworks and fireworks-like objects high into the night sky. But after the first rocket, people started to make rockets that could go even further and faster. In World War II, people used rockets for war and in the 1950s and 60s, people used them to explore space.

In the 70s, 80s and 90s, people used rockets and missiles to launch satellites, space shuttles, and other things they needed to get into space.

Today, we use rockets to send robots and humans to the moon and other planets and moons in our Solar System. We also use rockets to launch satellites that help us communicate, take pictures of Earth, and watch the weather.

We are always making new improvements to rockets and missiles. As new technology and materials become available, people make new and better rockets, allowing us to explore space and learn more about the universe.
