When we eat food, it goes into our stomachs. Our stomachs have juices inside of them that help to break down the food into smaller pieces. This process is called digestion, and it's like taking apart a puzzle to make the pieces smaller and easier to use.
Once the food is broken down, it moves into our small intestines. The small intestines have tiny little fingers called villi that stick out and grab onto the small pieces of food. Think of them like little fingers picking up small toys.
Our bodies are really good at knowing what to do with different kinds of food. When we eat things like apple slices, our bodies break them down easily. But when we eat things like meat or cheese, our bodies have to work a little bit harder to break them down into small pieces.
Once the food is all broken down in our small intestines, our bodies take the nutrients we need from the food and use them to make energy and to grow. The rest of the food that our bodies can't use goes out of our bodies as poop.
