ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Torus knot

Okay kiddo, imagine you have a long piece of string. Now imagine taking that string and tying it into a knot where the ends connect to each other, kind of like a loop. That's a regular knot, right?

Now, for a torus knot, we're going to do something different. We're going to take that same piece of string, but this time we're going to loop it around in a specific way before tying the knot. We're going to loop it around like a coil, so that it runs around the center of a circle before coming back up and tying the knot.

To make things even more interesting, we're going to choose how many times we wrap the string around the circle before tying the knot. So we might wrap it around once, or twice, or three times, or even more! Each time we wrap the string around, it creates a new loop that winds around the main circle in a different way.

Now, the cool thing about torus knots is that they're not just regular knots - they're knots that are tied on a special shape called a torus. A torus is like a donut shape - it's got a big circle on the outside and a smaller circle on the inside, and they're connected to each other by a smooth surface.

So when we tie a torus knot, we're actually creating a twisty, looping shape that winds around the surface of a donut! And depending on how many times we wrapped the string around the circle, and which way we wound it, we can make all sorts of different torus knot shapes. Pretty cool, huh?
