ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Transition words

Okay kiddo, transition words are words that help us move from one idea or sentence to another. They are like helpers that make our writing and speaking sound smoother and more organized.

Let's say you are telling a story about going to the park. You start by saying, "I woke up early in the morning." But then, you want to talk about what you did at the park. A transition word you could use here is "then." So it would sound like this, "I woke up early in the morning. Then, I went to the park and played on the swings."

Another example of a transition word is "because." Let's say you want to explain why you didn't go to the park with your friends. You can say, "I didn't go to the park with my friends because I had homework to do."

So you see, transition words are like special words that help us go from one idea to another in our writing and speaking. They make it easier for others to understand what we are trying to say.
