Transmittance

Transmittance is like when you try to look through a dirty window. If the window is clean, you can see through it easily – that’s like having high transmittance. But if the window is really dirty, it’s hard to see what’s on the other side – that’s like having low transmittance.

In science, transmittance is a measurement of how much light can pass through a sample. For example, if you put a colored piece of glass in front of a light, some of the light will be absorbed by the glass and won’t make it through to the other side. The transmittance of the glass is a measurement of how much light does make it through.

Scientists use transmittance measurements to study lots of different things, like how much pollution is in the air or how well a medicine works in the body. By measuring how much light can pass through a sample, they can learn more about what’s inside it.
