A trauma trigger is like a squeaky toy that reminds you of your puppy. Just like the toy reminds you of your dog, a trigger reminds someone of something really, really bad that happened to them in the past.
For example, let’s say someone had a scary experience during a thunderstorm. Even when it’s sunny outside, hearing a loud clap of thunder might make them feel scared and anxious because it reminds them of that scary experience. This would be a trigger for them.
Triggers can be different for different people. For some, it might be a certain smell or sound, while for others it might be a place or a person. And just like a puppy outgrowing the squeaky toy, with time and help, people can also outgrow their trauma triggers.
